School for Talents meets the Cluster of Excellence "Data-Integrated Simulation Science": Re-thinking the human as an engineered system

July 29, 2022

Within the realm of this year’s School for Talents annual theme “Systems Reloaded – New Perspectives”, our participants from the 2022/23 cohort came together at [frei]raum in Stuttgart with Prof. Miriam Schulte, Deputy Head of the Institute for Parallel and Distributed Systems as well as Prof. Oliver Röhrle, Director of the Institute for Modelling and Simulation of Biomechanical Systems and Laura Schmid, Reseach Assistant at the Institute for Modelling and Simulation of Biomechanical Systems at the University of Stuttgart.

The workshop addressed the question of whether and how humans themselves can be considered as systems. The students were able to experience the question in a mixture of short talks, brainstorming and group discussions in a very general way, from the perspective of the Cluster of Excellence 'Data-Integrated Simulation Science' and using a very concrete example project, presented by Laura Schmid.

Since humans as a system are in many ways a much more sensitive system than a technical system such as a building or a machine, many very exciting and cross-disciplinary questions were discussed. From the question of ethical guidelines, rules for using research results in clinics to the question of how large the modelled systems can or should be as well as the next vision and goal for the future of human system.

This final workshop of the first annual program module was the perfect bridge towards the next phase – experience and application – where the participants will start to develop their own project ideas within the framework of our topic "Systems Reloaded".

We look forward to seeing where the next phase will lead us, stay tuned!
