Gruppenbild Workshop

Joint workshop on Computational Models in Biology and Medicine

June 26, 2023 / ts

Computational models in biology and medicine  - this was the topic of the annual workshop that brought together about 80 researchers and was held at the University of Stuttgart from 15th to 16th June.

Organized by the GMDS1/IBS2-DR working groups

  • Mathematical Models in Medicine and Biology that is led by Ingmar Lauche (TU Dresden) as well as Nicole Radde (Universität Stuttgart / SimTech) and
  • Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics lead of Michael Altenbuchinger (University Medical Center Göttingen), Tim Kacprowski (Technical University of Braunschweig) and Markus Wolfien (University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Dresden)

The workshop intended to bring together researchers from different research areas such as systems biology, bioinformatics and biostatistics, who are interested in modelling and analysis of biological systems or in the development of statistical methods with applications in biology and medicine. The Cluster of Excellence SimTech participated as a host this year.

During the 2-day-workshop, that is mainly aimed at young researchers at different career stages, about 80 participants discussed models, methods and simulations in biological and (bio)medical applications. Insights into the research field and their research were provided by four keynote speakers

  • Lars Kaderali (University of Greifswald),
  • Matthias König (Institute for Theoretical Biology, Humboldt University Berlin),
  • Jana Wolf (Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine Berlin) and
  • Achim Tresch (Institute of Medical Statistics and Computational Biology, University of Cologne).

Between these four sessions, participants had the opportunity to show their work in short presentations or posters and discuss their work with the fellow members.

“One of the goals of the workshop is to foster professional exchange and networking amongst the participants. The feedback was great and we are looking back to a very successful event, for which we would like to express our sincere thanks for the support from GMDS, IBS and SimTech, who made this exchange format possible”, underlines SimTech PI and member of the SimTech Board of Directors Nicole Radde, one of this year’s hosts.

Vincent Wagner, doctoral researcher in SimTech, was honoured with the Best Poster Award of the workshop for his poster on “Eulerian Parameter Inference”. Congratulations and many thanks for interesting and lively discussions and great input.
