Between hackathon and hike: The GS SimTech weekend retreatment for doctoral researchers

July 18, 2023 / ts

Every year, the members of the Graduate School SimTech (GS SimTech) meet for a weekend off-campus to come together. This year, they met at Burg
Rothenfels in Bavaria from 7 to 9 July 2023. Organized by the doctoral representative speakers, the participants discussed research topics, attended workshops and of course enjoyed time to network and get to know each other

A lot to do!

After arriving at Friday afternoon the program started with an introduction called “Minute Madness” - a fast-paced activity where participants complete as many tasks as possible within a minute. The benefits include time efficiency, skill development, team building, fun and engagement and adaptability. It was followed by a Git workshop that prepared the doctoral researchers for the highlight of the next day: the Hackathon. One of the doctoral researchers described the Hackathon as „teamwork with a competitive character, which is fun but and can be leading to really innovative results.” It not only requires Creativity, collaborations and a fast solving of challenges,
but also it will be applicable in preparation for the annual status seminar of the Excellence Cluster SimTech, in Bad Boll 2024.

The weekend retreat offered also a lot of networking potential. The interdisciplinary origins of the doctoral students added value to the discussions during lunch or in the evenings about the use of quantum computing, the need of sustainability in data management and so on. During the program the participants were interviewed by the SimTech management team with the goal, to make the people and their research of GS SimTech more visible, tell their stories and promote science transfer and motivate the researchers to join the community of the GS SimTech. The results are soon to be seen…

̈Sunday framed the event with a joint hike followed by a talk with a SimTech postdoc, the so called Postdoc Wisdom, where a former doctoral researcher talked about his experiences along the phD journey. At "Bringing all together", the individual hackathon subprojects were put together to form a large were put together and reviewed as one big whole.

Thanks for the enriching, fun and innovative weekend!
