Influence of anisotropy and permeability on turbulent pumping by highly space and time-resolved measurements

PN 1-3 (II)

Project description

This project focuses on understanding the mechanisms of turbulence pumping induced by anisotropic porous structures with different permeabilities. The energy, mass and momentum transfers, associated to these fluid flow interactions, are investigated experimentally by performing single-phase measurements of the velocity and temperature fields in the mixing layer, generated at the interface between the free flow and the porous structure. Thereby, the present project targets RQ1, RQ2, RQ3 by: (A) performing high temporal and spatial resolution measurements at the non-smooth interface of porous structures. (B) investigating the interfacial exchange processes and contributing to the development of data-driven descriptive models for the interfacial region (C) integrating artificial intelligence methods in the post-processing of PIV (particle image velocimetry) and PIT (particle image thermometry) data to increase the spatial resolution to sub-pixel accuracy and optimise the experimental settings for the different flow regimes. These goals are to be achieved through close cooperation.

The project is related to the Multiphase Flow Lab.
