Summary of the short course

Contrary to our understanding, turbulent flow in porous media can be found in different engineering applications such as many kinds of fixed-bed reactors for heat transfer, catalyst and absorption, metal foam and transpiration cooling for gas turbines. However, the understanding and modeling methods are lacking due to its high topological complexity. The lecture is aimed to cover the recent advance on physical understanding based on direct numerical simulation (DNS) and the volume-averaged modeling method of turbulence inside porous media. The volume-averaged models are developed and then calibrated with the data from DNS.

Lecturer

Dr. Xu Chu is currently a Habilitand in the Cluster of Excellence SimTech, University of Stuttgart. He obtained his Bachelor degree (Automotive Engineering) from the Tongji University in Shanghai, China and later Dipl.-Ing (Automotive Engineering) and Dr. -Ing (Thermo-hydraulic) from the University of Stuttgart. He was a junior group leader at the Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics (ITLR) of the University of Stuttgart between 2016-2019. In the last five years, he has published 40 journal papers on J. of Fluid Mechanics, Int. J. of Heat and Mass Transfer, Physics of Fluids, Physical Review Fluids and others. His expertise lies on physical understanding and engineering applications of turbulent flow, porous media flow and multi-phase flow.
