The Special Interest Group Data Infrastructure offers a forum to interested working groups that want to set up or further develop an RDM infrastructure at working group or institute level. We invite you to a monthly SIGDIUS seminar, to which we invite internal and external experts for presentations and discussions. SIGDIUS members will have the opportunity to exchange their experiences with concrete RDM infrastructures.

We cordially invite all interested parties to our next meeting on 05.02.2020:

Ulrike Wittig (HITS, Heidelberg): "Research data management by SEEK/FAIRDOMHub"

SEEK/FAIRDOMHub
is a data management platform for interdisciplinary projects to support the storage and exchange of data and models from research partners based on the FAIR principles. The SEEK software can be installed, run and further developed as an own instance but there is also the web-accessible public Commons platform FAIRDOMHub (https://fairdomhub.org/), offering public information and password protected user collaboration spaces. The SEEK data management system supports a yellow pages catalogue for people, projects and skills; and a commons for projects’ data files, models, SOPs/lab protocols, workflows, samples, and other assets. The project assets are structured using the ISA (Investigation, Study, Assay) standard. A variety of data security levels allow controlled access and secure sharing between project partners; a variety of dissemination mechanisms are supported such as DOIs and export. SEEK/FAIRDOMHub is used in many different national and international research projects and is an integral member of several infrastructure initiatives (e.g. ELIXIR, German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure - de.NBI).

Ulrike Wittig
has a background in biochemistry and received her Ph.D. in biology for the experimental work on mechanisms of apoptosis and oxidative stress in mammalian cells. She is a research associate in the Scientific Database and Visualization group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), Germany. For more than 20 years she is active in the development of biological databases, database curation and data management. She is member of the Systems Biology Service Center of de.NBI /ELIXIR-Germany and of the FAIRDOM initiative. Ulrike Wittig is getting involved with the Biocuration community and as a member of the STRENDA commission she actively supports the initiative for Standards for Reporting Enzymology Data.

At the University of Stuttgart an increasing number of working groups want to comply with the FAIR Data Principles. Therefore they want to use a laboratory-information-management-system / electronic laboratory book (LIMS/ELN) for their experimental work or a documentation system for simulation work. Such systems are used for data integration and facilitate for example the connection of experimentally acquired data to the respective modelling environment.

The development of methods, standards and tools for research data management (RDM) is currently very dynamic; the scientific fields are fragmented in terms of processes and standards. This fragmentation is particularly evident in a number of about 300 existing LIMS/ELN products, which on the one hand offer very specific solutions for individual applications and on the other hand try to serve a broad spectrum of users. Under these conditions, it is difficult to select the appropriate RDM strategy.
