Each year, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) publishes a thematically oriented calendar with twelve photo motifs of DFG-funded projects that illustrate the projects' research work. This year, the twelve monthly pages show how the projects understand how to use digital processes.
In 2022, the calendar is the result of a competition in which SimTech participated with several proposals. In the end, Jakob Dürrwächter, Daniel Kempf and Claus-Dieter Munz prevailed and present the December picture, which shows the simulation of the formation of vortices on a square plate with air flowing diagonally from below. The vortices formed above the plate are visualized in plan view by streamlines. Here, the color codes the flow velocity: slow flow is shown in red, fast flow in blue. The basis of the image is the very precise flow code FLEXI.
The image was created as part of a SimTech project that uses this code to create an open-source database for various flow test cases. It can be used to validate other codes and as a training dataset for machine learning applications that are intended to accelerate or partially replace complex flow simulations in the future.
