Research Group on Statistical Model-Data Integration at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union 2025

April 11, 2025

Anneli Guthke’s Research Group on Statistical Model-Data Integration will be actively involved in the upcoming General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU25)  taking place from 27 April to 2 May 2025 in Vienna. This major international event brings together geoscientists from around the world to exchange ideas across disciplines of Earth, planetary, and space sciences.

Anneli Guthke will co-chair two sessions:

In addition, she  will present a talk titled “Training Surrogates with Knowledge and Data: A Bayesian Hybrid Modelling Strategy”, highlighting collaborative work with her doctoral researcher Philipp Reiser.

Further contributions from her group include a presentation by doctoral researcher Manuel Álvarez Chaves on “Evaluating uncertainty in probabilistic deep learning models using Information Theory”. Manuel will also contribute to a talk by Eduardo Acuna Espinoza (KIT Karlsruhe) on “An approach for handling multiple temporal frequencies with different input dimensions using a single LSTM cell”.

These sessions and talks tackle central challenges in the group’s research:

  • How can we better diagnose and understand our models to identify weaknesses and improve predictions?
  • How do we design transparent and trustworthy workflows to support decision-making in environmental systems?

And how can we best combine process-based simulations with data-driven methods to advance in Earth Science modeling?

Anneli Guthke is excited to once again convene these well-established sessions, which have gained recognition within the hydrological community.  She is especially proud of the strong and forward-thinking contributions by her team.

“We are looking forward to connecting with leading geoscientists from around the globe and engaing in discussions about how to make models more insightful and useful,” says Guthke.

Registration for EGU25 is now open. Find more information about the event here: https://www.egu25.eu/.
