Professor Ivan Yotov from the University of Pittsburgh will be joining SimTech as a visiting professor from May 15 to July 15, 2024. During his visit, he will contribute to SimTech's ongoing research and engage in a series of talks, workshops, and teaching sessions.
Professor Yotov is a world leader in the field of numerical simulation of partial differential equations, focusing on discretization techniques, multi-scale solvers, coupled multi-field problems, and predictive modeling. His interdisciplinary approach connects applied mathematics with engineering sciences, making him a valuable asset to the SimTech and SFB 1313 community.
Professor Yotov will present a SimTech colloquium talk on July 10 titled "Domain Decomposition Methods for Multiphysics Problems". In this talk, he will discuss a general domain decomposition methodology for solving complex simulation problems. The simulation domain is partitioned into non-overlapping subdomains, with continuity conditions on the interfaces maintained through Lagrange multipliers. This approach is suitable for multiscale discretizations and parallel computations.
Additionally, Professor Yotov will conduct a Short Course for the GS SimTech program, sharing his expertise with graduate students. From June 12 to 14, he will also participate in the SFB1313/SimTech workshop "Coupled Free Flow - Porous Medium Systems." He is scheduled to give a talk on June 12 titled "Robin-Robin Partitioned Methods for Coupled Free Fluid and Poroelastic Flows."
Ivan Yotov expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, saying, "I am delighted to be joining the University of Stuttgart as a visiting professor. I look forward to collaborating with SimTech and SFB1313, sharing insights, and engaging with the academic community. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with colleagues in my field and contribute to the exciting research happening here."
Professor Yotov's background is as impressive as his research. He earned his Master's degree in Mathematics in Bulgaria before moving to the United States, where he continued his studies at Rice University, earning both a Master's in Computational and Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. He has served as a professor at the University of Pittsburgh since 1998, where he is currently a Full Professor, with numerous accolades and fellowships to his name. His publication record is extensive, with 106 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 6,300 citations, highlighting the impact of his work.
His visit to the University of Stuttgart is a significant opportunity for both SimTech and SFB1313, offering collaboration and knowledge exchange. We look forward to the expertise and insights that Professor Yotov will bring to our academic community this summer.
