In the summer term 2021, Peter Knabner from the Chair of Applied Mathematics (Modeling and Numerics) at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg joins the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science as a visiting professor.

“It is my pleasure to be back here in Stuttgart after receiving the Argyris Visiting Professorship in 2018 and to link again with the researchers of SimTech and SFB 1313.”, states Pter Knabner.

One focus of his activities at the University of Stuttgart will be master's and doctoral teaching for SimTech students and related courses. The goal is to close the gap between mathematical theory and simulation practice, respectively to make (rigorous) mathematics much more useful for simulation technology than before. Peter Knabner has over 40 years of experience in these areas. His spectrum ranges from pure mathematics to resilient engineering applications. This is also reflected in his extensive and wide-ranging textbook production in recent years. For SimTech teaching, in addition to his book on mathematical modeling, his book with Lutz Angermann on numerical methods for partial differential equations plays an important role. For the PhD students, he currently offers a seminar on “Mathematical Theory for Simulation Practitioners” where he addresses master and PhD students with basic knowledge and experience in continuum mechanics based mathematical modeling and numerical simulations of natural or technical processes.

At the same time, he will work together with Rainer Helmig, member of the SimTech board of directors and speaker of the SFB 1313, among others. Both have developed a unified view of multiscale problems that is central to SimTech and especially the SFB. "Much of what has been done and will be done in our and his (former and still active) working group fits in here. The new view allows us to move substantially in content beyond the purely macroscopic modeling that has been our model of success for the last few decades, without having to give up the numerical advantages we have acquired. We want to make this view, which is based on rigorous mathematics in its approach, better known in the community in several principled publications," says Rainer Helmig about both their plans.

About Peter Knabner

Prof. Dr. Peter Knabner works in the field of Applied Analysis and Numerical Mathematics. After his Abitur in 1972, he studied mathematics at the Free University of Berlin and computer science at the Technical University of Berlin. After his diploma, he dealt for example with free boundary value problems and received his doctorate in 1983 at the University of Augsburg. There he habilitated in 1988 on mathematical models for transport and sorption of dissolved substances in porous media. Since 1994, he holds the chair of applied mathematics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg.

Since the 1980s, he has concentrated on the derivation, analysis and numerical approximation of mathematical models for flow and transport in porous media, with the aim of contributing to mathematics as well as to the concerned applications in engineering and natural sciences, in particular hydrogeology. The spectrum meanwhile extends to multiphase multicomponent flows, with vanishing/developing phases, general chemical reactions and effects of evolving microstructure on porous media flow.

In 2018, he was awarded with the Argyris Visiting Professorship of the Cluster of Excellence “Simulation Technology”, the predecessor of EXC 2075 “Data-integrated Simulation Science”.
