We warmly welcome Prof Mathias Niepert as the new chair for “Machine Learning for Simulation Science,” a joint appointment between SimTech and the department of Computer Science.
Since Mathias had obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Indiana University (USA), he has spent his professional life in equal parts in academic and industrial research labs. At NEC Laboratories Europe he was senior (2015-2017) and chief research scientist (2019-2021) as well as manager (2019-2021) of the machine learning group. From 2013-2015 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Allen School of Computer Science, University of Washington. In addition, Mathias was Akademischer Rat in the Data and Web Science Research Group at the University of Mannheim.
His research interests include representation learning for graph-structured data, geometric deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, and the intersection of ML and the simulation sciences. His group's methods are concerned with learning, inducing, and leveraging relational structure with applications in vision, natural language processing, and the (bio-)medical domain.
“I am very excited to join the University of Stuttgart and specifically SimTech due to the numerous opportunities to collaborate. While the impact of machine learning in the sciences is growing, meaningful applications require multi-disciplinary teams and the integration of existing domain knowledge. The openness and enthusiasm of SimTech members to explore the potential of machine learning in the simulation sciences has convinced me to join the university", underlines Mathias Niepert his decision to join SimTech and the University of Stuttgart.
Besides his position as a full professor (W3) at the University of Stuttgart, Mathias is also a faculty member of the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS) and continues to work as an advisor to NEC Laboratories Europe.
