The Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech) was established by the University of Stuttgart in 2015 as a faculty-like center. It provides the institutional framework that connects Simulation Science across faculties and institutes while researchers remain affiliated with their respective disciplinary units.
SC SimTech has its own governance structures for academic affairs, teaching, doctoral education and the strategic development of the Center. At the same time, it provides the institutional framework for collaborative research programmes such as the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075 “Data-Integrated Simulation Science”.
This structure allows SimTech to combine a permanent university-wide organization with research structures that can evolve as new scientific questions, collaborations and funding programmes emerge.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the central representative body of SC SimTech. Its voting members include the Board of Directors, SimTech Fellows and elected members. The General Assembly discusses and decides on matters of fundamental importance to the Center and contributes to its strategic and institutional development. As SimTech brings together researchers from different faculties and institutes, its membership reflects the interdisciplinary character of Simulation Science at the University of Stuttgart.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the central governing body of SC SimTech. It is responsible for the strategic and academic development of the Center and oversees matters including research, teaching and finances. The Board works closely with the General Assembly, the Management Team and the Center's other governance bodies to develop SimTech as the University of Stuttgart's central platform for Simulation Science.
Fellows & Members
SimTech Fellows form an important part of the Center's scientific governance. They are appointed by the Rectorate of the University of Stuttgart for a defined period and come from different faculties and disciplines. Further professors conducting research relevant to Simulation Science can become members of SC SimTech upon application and approval by the General Assembly. This model allows the Center to bring together expertise from across the University and to evolve its scientific network over time.
Management Team
The Management Team supports the Board of Directors and the Center's scientific community in the implementation of SimTech's activities. Its responsibilities include the coordination of research and academic structures as well as administration, doctoral education, study programmes, finances, research support, communication, events and other central activities of the Center.
Advisory Board
An external Advisory Board supports the strategic development and quality assurance of SimTech. Its members are internationally recognized researchers and experts from outside the University of Stuttgart. The Advisory Board provides independent advice on the scientific and strategic development of both SC SimTech and the Cluster of Excellence and regularly exchanges with the Board of Directors.
