Research 2019-2025

From 2019 to 2025, the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075 advanced Data-Integrated Simulation Science as a new paradigm in Simulation Science. The research investigated how data from experiments, observations and simulations could be systematically integrated into the modeling–simulation–analysis cycle to improve the understanding and prediction of complex systems.

Bringing together mathematical, computational, data-driven and application-oriented expertise, researchers addressed fundamental challenges such as combining physics- and data-based models, dealing with uncertainty, bridging scales and data regimes, and making complex simulations more accessible and interactive. The research programme connected these methodological questions with ambitious application scenarios and interdisciplinary research projects.

Visionary Examples

Three ambitious application scenarios provided orientation for the research: engineered geosystems, digital human models and next-generation virtual materials design. They served as challenging environments in which new methods for Data-Integrated Simulation Science could be developed and tested.

Focus Challenges

Six methodological Focus Challenges defined the central scientific questions of the Cluster – ranging from multi-scale and multi-physics modelling and the integration of physics and data to uncertainty, changing computational environments and interactive simulation and visualization.

Fields of Expertise

The research drew on expertise from across the University of Stuttgart, combining application fields with mathematics, machine learning, scientific computing, visualization and research infrastructure.
