Biological systems are shaped by interacting processes across multiple spatial and temporal scales and vary considerably between individuals. PN 2 investigated how detailed computational models could capture this complexity while integrating system-specific data to enable more individualized and predictive simulations.
The research focused on coupled models of the neuromuscular system as well as proliferative and degenerative diseases. It combined biological knowledge, experimental and clinical data, mathematical modelling and computational methods to connect processes from the cellular level to tissues, organs and whole-system behaviour.
Research Focus
The research addressed four closely connected challenges:
- Multiscale system models: How could models of cells, tissues and organs be linked across different spatial and temporal scales?
- Data-integrated modelling: How could heterogeneous biological data and detailed biophysical models be combined to capture complex system behaviour?
- Individualization: How could population and patient-specific data be used to move from generic towards individualized models?
- Reusable and efficient simulation: How could models and data be standardized, shared and simulated efficiently even with limited computational resources?
