Pervasive simulation aims to make simulation technology available wherever and whenever it is needed – from mobile devices and mixed-reality systems to cloud and high-performance computing environments. PN 7 investigated how complex simulations could operate reliably across these heterogeneous infrastructures while integrating changing data sources and enabling users to interact with simulations in real time.
The research focused on adaptive simulation systems that could respond dynamically to computational resources, environmental conditions and user behaviour. Traceability and provenance were used to support reproducibility and adaptation, while new visualization and interaction methods enabled human-in-the-loop simulations in mobile, augmented- and virtual-reality environments.
Research Focus
The research addressed three closely connected questions:
- Adaptive simulation systems: How could simulations be modelled, deployed and automatically adapted across changing and heterogeneous computing environments?
- Traceability and reproducibility: How could provenance information be captured and used to trace parameters, computations and data while maintaining computational efficiency?
- Adaptive interaction and visualization: How could interactive visualization systems respond to users and their environment in real time, including mobile, augmented- and virtual-reality applications?
