Data-Integrated Models and Methods for Multiphase Fluid Dynamics

Project network 1 (PN 1)

Interaction of research questions

Multiphase flows occur in many natural and technological systems and often involve interacting physical processes across very different spatial and temporal scales. Small-scale phenomena at interfaces can strongly influence the behaviour of the overall system, making reliable modelling and prediction particularly challenging.

PN 1 investigated how detailed simulations, experimental data and data-driven methods could be combined with physics-based modelling to improve the simulation of multiphase flows in free-flow and porous-media systems. A particular focus was on transferring information across scales and flow regimes and on developing models and numerical methods that remained accurate and computationally feasible.

Research Focus

The research addressed four closely connected questions:

  • Interface descriptions: How could complex processes at fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interfaces be represented accurately?
  • Interface closures: How could detailed small-scale information be incorporated into models for larger-scale simulations?
  • Turbulence closures: How could data improve the modelling of turbulent multiphase flows?
  • Scale bridging and applications: How could models and data from different scales be combined to enable realistic simulations of complex systems?
