Advancing Simulation Science Across Disciplines
Simulation has become an essential way of understanding, predicting and shaping complex systems. Many of today’s scientific challenges, however, can no longer be addressed within individual disciplines alone. They require new mathematical models, computational methods, data-driven approaches and ways of dealing with uncertainty – developed across disciplinary boundaries.
The Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech) provides the environment in which this research can come together.
Our Mission
Our mission is to advance Simulation Science as an interdisciplinary research field and to strengthen its long-term development at the University of Stuttgart.
SimTech connects researchers, methods and expertise across institutes and faculties. It creates a framework for collaborative research, supports the development of new scientific approaches and research initiatives, and links cutting-edge research with doctoral education, study programmes and scientific infrastructure.
By bringing together different disciplinary perspectives, SimTech enables research on fundamental challenges in modelling, simulation and prediction that cannot be addressed by individual disciplines alone.
Our Scientific Profile
SimTech focuses on the methodological foundations of Simulation Science.
Our research asks how simulations can become more reliable, predictive, efficient and useful when models, data and real-world systems are complex and uncertain.
This includes questions such as:
- How can uncertainty in models, data and predictions be quantified and reduced?
- How can data, machine learning and simulation be integrated?
- How can complex multiscale and multiphysics systems be modelled efficiently?
- How can computational methods become more reliable, interpretable and scalable?
- How can research data and software contribute to open and reproducible Simulation Science?
Applications from engineering, the natural sciences and other fields provide challenging real-world problems that drive the development of new methods. The methodological insights gained in turn contribute to a broad range of scientific disciplines.

SC SimTech provides the overarching structure that connects this expertise.
Researchers remain firmly rooted in their respective disciplines and institutes. SimTech creates an additional interdisciplinary level at which methods, research questions and ideas can be shared, combined and developed into new collaborations.
In this role, the Center connects:
- interdisciplinary and collaborative research,
- doctoral education and early-career development,
- the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Simulation Technology,
- research data, software and scientific infrastructure,
- international scientific cooperation,
- and the development of future research initiatives and consortia.

SimTech aims to establish Stuttgart as one of the internationally recognized locations where Simulation Science is advanced as an interdisciplinary scientific field.
At the University of Stuttgart, our ambition is to be the central platform that brings together and provides visibility for Simulation Science across institutional and disciplinary boundaries.
Internationally, we aim to contribute to the development of new methods, research questions and standards in Simulation Science and to create an environment that attracts researchers, students and partners from around the world.
