Prof. Dr. Volker Mehrmann (TU Berlin), member of the SimTech Advisory Board, has been appointed “EMS Distinguished Lecturer 2026” by the European Mathematical Society (EMS).

Prof. Mehrmann is Professor of Numerical Mathematics at Technische Universität Berlin and one of the internationally leading experts in numerical linear algebra, differential-algebraic equations, and control theory, with numerous contributions to port-Hamiltonian systems. From 2019 to 2022 he served as President of the European Mathematical Society, is a member of several academies (including acatech and the Academia Europaea), and a Fellow of both SIAM and the American Mathematical Society.

His expertise in structure-preserving modelling, simulation, and control of complex multiphysical systems is highly relevant to the research conducted at SimTech. Through his role on the Advisory Board, Volker Mehrmann contributes these perspectives to strategic decisions, the definition of research priorities, and the development of new collaborations – in particular in areas such as energy-based modelling, model reduction, and the analysis of large coupled systems.

The nomination for EMS Distinguished Lecturer was jointly submitted by the EMS Topical Activity Groups ANLAMA – Numerical Linear Algebra and pH. The pH community comprises researchers working on port-Hamiltonian, energy-based models and methods for the analysis and control of dynamical systems – a field to whose advancement Mehrmann has significantly contributed.

SimTech warmly congratulates Volker Mehrmann on this outstanding distinction.
