The SimTech community is thrilled to announce that Professor Inga Berre from the University of Bergen has been appointed as the Argyris Visiting Professor for the year 2023. This prestigious position reflects the recognition of Professor Berre's outstanding contributions to the field of simulation technology and her significant impact on advancing research in the domain.
Inga Berre was born in 1978 and is mother of 3 children. She studied Mathematics and Computational Sciences at the University of Bergen where she also passed her PhD in Applied Mathematics. Since 2013, she is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bergen. In 2012, Inga Berre received the Lauritz Meltzer Prize for Young Researchers from the University of Bergen. In 2017, she was elected to the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, and since 2021, she has been a lifetime member of the AERG Association of ERC Grantees. She is the principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator Grant: “Mathematical and Numerical Modelling of Process-Structure Interaction in Fractured Geothermal Systems”.
The Argyris Visiting Professorship which was installed in 2014 is a distinguished program that brings eminent scholars to the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science and the Cluster of Excellence SimTech, fostering an exchange of knowledge and ideas between international experts and the SimTech community. Professor Berre's appointment is a testament to her exceptional work in the field, highlighting her as a leader whose expertise will undoubtedly enrich the academic environment at SimTech.
“Inga Berre has demonstrated with her research a unique ability to combine advanced computational mathematics with data science and with a deep physical insight and a keen sense for important practical applications. She has published important papers on some of the most complex and difficult problems in subsurface hydrology, often involving multi-component, multi-phase, non-isothermal flow systems”, underlines Rainer Helmig his nomination.
Inga Berre is worldwide well known as an excellent researcher in the field of applied mathematics and beyond. Her main research interests are mathematical modelling, partial differential equations and numerical methods, motivated by simulation of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes in geothermal systems and fault reactivation induced by subsurface injection and production. Inga has worked extensively on flow transport and deformation processes in fracture-matrix systems. An internationally noted focus has been on control volume discretization using a multi-point flow approximation to model discrete fracture-matrix systems for anisotropic and fractured porous media in two and three spatial dimensions.
Moreover, Professor Berre is closely associated with the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1313 "Interface-Driven Multi-field Processes in Porous Media – Flow, Transport, and Deformation." She not only actively contributes to the center's research endeavors but also serves on its Advisory Board since the first funding period of SFB 1313. The strong connection between SFB 1313 and SimTech is exemplified through their collaboration, particularly within SimTech's Project Network 1. This collaboration facilitates a dynamic exchange of ideas, resources, and expertise, enhancing the synergy between the two entities and furthering advancements in simulation technology and porous media research.
As we look forward to Professor Inga Berre's tenure as the Argyris Visiting Professor, we anticipate a fruitful collaboration that will continue to strengthen the ties between SimTech, SFB 1313 and the University of Bergen, fostering innovation and excellence in the realm of simulation technology and porous media research. In 2024, Inga Berre will spend an extended stay at the University of Stuttgart. Stay tuned for further announcements and information.
