Alicia Heck, M.Ed., has been awarded the Bürkert University Award for Theses 2024 by the Christian and Dorothee Bürkert Foundation for her outstanding master’s thesis entitled “Development of a CAMMP Workshop on the Topic of Encryption.” The award, endowed with €1,000, recognizes excellent final theses at the University of Stuttgart. The official award ceremony will take place during the university’s annual celebration on Friday, November 28, 2025.
In her thesis, Alicia developed a new CAMMP workshop (Computational and Mathematical Modeling Program) that introduces school students to the mathematical foundations of encryption and data security. The workshop combines applied mathematics, computer-based modeling, and hands-on experimentation to make the principles of modern cryptography tangible and engaging. By connecting real-world relevance with scientific problem-solving, the workshop encourages young learners to explore the power of mathematics in digital communication and cybersecurity.
The CAMMP program, originally founded at RWTH Aachen University and now also established at the University of Stuttgart, focuses on solving real and relevant problems through mathematical modeling and the use of computational methods in its workshops. The program targets high school students and enables them to experience the societal relevance of mathematics, helping them recognize the direct connection between mathematical concepts and their everyday lives.
Alicia’s thesis makes an important contribution to expanding the CAMMP workshop portfolio, particularly by adding a topic at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and information security. The resulting material is available for future CAMMP workshops and can serve as a model for further educational developments in this area.
The CAMMP initiative in Stuttgart is also supported and co-funded by SimTech as part of its outreach and education program.
Alicia studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Stuttgart, earning her B.A. (2017–2021) and M.Ed. (2021–2024). She is currently pursuing her PhD at the Institute for Applied Analysis and Numerical Simulation (IANS), where she also contributes to educational and outreach activities in mathematical modeling.
The Christian and Dorothee Bürkert Foundation, based in Ingelfingen, supports education, science, and social engagement. Named after entrepreneur Christian Bürkert (1915–1971) and his wife Dorothee Bürkert (1926–2012), the foundation promotes young talent and innovation through scholarships and academic awards. In addition to the Bürkert University Award, the foundation also funds initiatives in education, research, and social projects throughout Germany.
