Alexander von Humboldt Colloquium Highlights International Exchange in Simulation Science

How can mathematical models help us understand complex transport processes in porous materials, fractured media and other multiscale systems? These questions are at the heart of research in the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1313, which is part of the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SimTech).

On 9 July 2026, SFB 1313 will bring together five researchers whose applications have been selected for funding by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The special Alexander von Humboldt Colloquium celebrates this exceptional success while creating a forum for scientific exchange across disciplines, institutions and international research networks.

The invited researchers contribute expertise ranging from multiphysics modelling and numerical analysis to transport processes in porous media and multiscale approaches for complex fracture systems. Their work connects closely to central questions in simulation science: how can processes across different spatial and temporal scales be represented reliably, how can models capture coupled physical phenomena, and how can numerical methods make these systems accessible for research and application?

For SimTech, the colloquium underlines the importance of strong international partnerships in advancing simulation-based research. It also reflects the interdisciplinary environment created by SFB 1313, where mathematics, engineering, and computational methods come together to investigate flow and transport in porous-media systems.

The colloquium will take place on 9 July 2026, from 2:30 to 5:30 pm, at the Multi Media Lab, Pfaffenwaldring 61, Campus Vaihingen.

Among the speakers are Ivan Yotov (University of Pittsburgh), Zixin Chen and Taras Mel'nyk (University of Stuttgart), Bo Guo (University of Arizona), and Kundan Kumar (University of Bergen). Their talks will cover topics including multiphysics problems, evaporation-driven salt transport, and multiscale transport models in fractured media.
