PN 5: Multi-phase and multi-physics modelling

Projektnetzwerk 5Coordinator: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Helmig
Research Areas: B, D, E, F
Number of projects: 13 + 1 JP seed project

The Project Network 5 is a strongly interconnected network of research projects with the common goal of a reliable and efficient modeling of multi-phase flow and materials, which is able to account for the multi-scale multi-physics nature of the simulated processes.

In particular, we face highly complex applications such as fuel injection, CO2 storage, soft biological tissue mechanics and the delivery of therapeutic agents into tumors. The overall modeling process demands a close linkage and a smooth interaction of physical and mathematical model design, numerical discretisation technology, and high performance computing software infrastructure. We are convinced to cope with this tremendous challenge by contributing our expert knowledge from the various involved scientific fields. Our joint goal is to evolve from isolated single-scale approaches to a multi-physics multi-scale numerical simulation environment, and to perform first steps towards the realization of the visions of the Cluster of Excellence.
