On 9 May at 7:00pm, the science exhibit “In the Digital Lab” was officially opened at the Planetarium Stuttgart with a festive Vernissage. After welcoming addresses by Planetarium Director Dr. Uwe Lemmer and Prof. Dr. Wolfram Ressel, Rector of the University of Stuttgart, the individual research associations were briefly introduced by Prof. Dr. Thomas Ertl, Vice Spokesperson of the SimTech Excellence cluster, and Prof. Dr. Christian Holm, Speaker of the SFB 716. Tom Poljanšek, science-slam-experienced researcher at SimTech, gave an entertaining and philosophical talk entitled “Simulierte Wirklichkeit – wirkliche Simulationen” (Simulated reality – Real simulations).
A surprise item on the programme was the compelling 360° animated film “Im digitalen Labor” ("In the Digital Lab") which had been specially produced for the planetarium dome by the visualisation institute in cooperation with the Planetarium Stuttgart. The film provided a brief introduction to the world of computer simulations. Afterward, the many visitors took advantage of the opportunity to see the exhibit and try out the analogue and digital interactions.
The exhibit was produced by the SimTech Excellence Cluster and the SFB 716 and will be on display at the Planetarium Stuttgart until 30 July 2017. The animated film will be shown before selected planetarium presentations during that time.
